Ruth contract hammers at $360,000

RUNNEMEDE, N.J. — Babe Ruth’s 1935 Boston Braves contract fetched $360,000 during Goldin Auctions’ sale that closed Aug. 5. Ruth’s farewell letter to Yankees owner Dan Topping sold for $60,000. Meanwhile, Michael Jordan’s 1998 playoff jersey for the Chicago Bulls sold for $168,000. Jordan game-worn and dual-signed shoes from 1991 sold for $14,700.

A trilogy of catchers’ mitts were on parade. Thurman Munson’s game-used catchers mitt (from Gene Michael) sold for $52,063; a Yogi Berra game-used, signed mitt sold for $39,813; and Roy Campanella’s 1956 game-used mitt sold for $36,750.

The first of a two-session auction grossed $3.1 million

Among other items that sold were:

  • Stan Musial 1956 game-used home Cardinals jersey for $85,750;
  • A New York Giants Super Bowl XLVI ring for $61,200;
  • Ted Williams’ 1947 game-used bat for $60,000;
  • A Ruth-signed and inscribed photo from the Yankees’ ‘Life of Babe Ruth” scrapbook for $53,288;
  • Bill Sharman’s 1950-’51 game-used Washington Capitols jersey for $42,875;
  • Tom Seaver’s game-used, signed Mets home jersey from 1974 for $26,950;
  • Nate Archibald’s 50 Greatest Players ring for $36,750; and
  • John Havlicek’s game-used, signed Celtics road jersey from 1978 for $12,500.

The second session, with Muhammad Ali gloves and other top items, continues till Aug. 13.
