Babe Ruth contract: $549,000; mitt $334,600

RUTHKRUNNEMEDE, N.J. — Babe Ruth’s 1922 Yankees contract, his first before making them the Bronx Bombers, sold for $549,000 in a sale ended May 8 by Goldin Auctions. Ruth’s catcher’s mitt used during his day’s at St. Mary’s, circa 1912, sold for $334,600.

Of course, this sale received substantial media coverage from the 2001 Mike Piazza jersey that sold privately for $365,072.

Among other items that sold were:

  • Ted Williams’ 1955 game-used Red Sox uniform for $179,250;
  • Williams’ signed Navy jersey supported by letters from Ted for $26,290;
  • A 1921 document from the Office of the Commissioner that was signed by every major league owner and both league presidents for $103,700;
  • A game-used Michael Jordan Bulls away jersey from 1997-’98 for $91,500;
  • A game-used Jordan Bulls home jersey from 1996-’97 for $46,360;
  • A single-signed Lou Gehrig baseball from 1939 for $67,100;
  • Larry Bird’s game-used home Celtics jersey from the May 22, 1988 Game 7 game for $64,050;
  • D.J. Bryant’s Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl ring from 2012 for $68,320;
  • David Cone’s 1998 World Series ring for $39,435;
  • Gary Carter’s Mets World Series trophy from 1986 for $39,435;
  • A signed 11×14-inch Babe Ruth photo for $26,290;
  • Ruth’s 1927 pocket watch, with a letter from the Babe Ruth Museum, for $25,620;
  • A 1928-’30 Ruth bat, given to Ty Cobb, for $23,180;
  • A single-signed Thurman Munson baseball for $21,960; and
  • Sal Maglie’s 1956 Dodgers National League championship ring for $17,080.
