1880s trophy style baseball: $25,958

SOUTH MILWAUKEE, Wisc. — A salesman sample of an 1880s trophy style baseball sold for $25,958 in a sale ended Aug. 1 through MEARS auctions. The horse hide-covered baseball stamped J.D. Shibe & Co. of Philadelphia was in near mint condition.

A game-used bat circa 1880s used by Johnny Morrill of the Boston Beaneaters sold for $8,266.

Jerseys also attracted the auction’s top bids. A Kobe Bryant game-worn rookie jersey sold for $6,831; a Carl Eller Minnesota Vikings road jersey from 1965-’65 sold for $7,349; and a Shaquille O’Neal Lakers game-worn home jersey from 1996-’97 fetched $1,755.
